Part of Herbert Allingham
Headed notepaper: Dundee Advertiser, Evening Telegraph and Post, The Happy Home, People's Journal, People's Friend, My Weekly, John Leng & Co. Ltd., 7 Bank Street, Dundee. Signed.
'The second instalment of 'The Mystery Man' is to hand.
We find the first chapter of it very leisurely, and we may have to condense it considerably with the view of speeding it up. The second chapter is all right. The third chapter too, is good, but we would like it to be carried down to a more dramatic curtain. I shall be glad if you will send me a continuation of say, another 1,000 words, carrying the story forward considerably and finishing on a fairly dramatic situation. I shall be glad also if you will keep in view in future instalments to make the story brisk and dramatic, but, of coruse, avoiding anything luridly sensational.'

'Many thanks for your short story, it was quote good. I have not read the three bottles of whisky yarn yet, but will do so as soon as possible. With regards sending you the two bottles of whisky it is impossible as there are not two bottles of whisky in the wide world.'

'Instalement 4 of ' The Woman Pays' is approved and I shall be glad to have instalment 5 at your earliest.
This reads very well and maintains the interest, but we feel that, compared with much of your work with which we are familiar, it is quiet and restrained. If you feel that you could give us greater strength in the treatment of the narrative without altering your scheme, you might consider the point. Probably when Dick returns you will have opportunities for strength that do not exist at present.'

'The price for second serial rights is so very small I should hardly think it worth your while to try. The provincial papers pay about £5 for these rights. The trouble and expense involved in placing them is scarcely covered by the returns [133].' Signed.

'I shall be in London on Wednesday 19th current, and shall be obliged if you will call to see me at our London Office, 186 Fleet Street, at 3 o'clock afternoon on that day. As I have a number of appointments, I hope the day and hour will suit you.
The two stories you are at present engaged upon are getting along very well, and we would need to be looking ahead for successors. I shall be glad if you will turn the matter over in your mind, between now and Wednesday, when we could discuss any ideas which you have.'
