Scope and content
Typescript copy of extract from Quintin Hogg's Last Letter dated 17 January 1903 on headed notepaper from The North British & Mercantile Insurance Copany, 61 Threadneedle Street, London EC. 'My precious boy, I was very much touched by your letter and the thought which led you to come back to me with the doubts and difficulties which have cropped up since you went out into the greater world outside the Poly. Do you remember sonnie how in the old days I advised you to stick to essentials. This one thing I know is better than a dozen creeds. WHatever else may be shaken there are some facts established beyond the warring of theologians. Forever, virtue is better than vice, truth than falsehood, kindness than brutaility. These, like love, 'never fail'. So you must not let you (? doubts) lead you to a wrong life. Don't confuse theology and religion. The one is a science to be proved or disproved, the other is a life to be lived.'
