Administrative history
Born in 1909, Dennis Venables was apprenticed to Shepherd & Woodward [Tailors]. He became tailor at Bartlett & Carter before opening his own shop with a Mr Bradbury in 1935. He bought Ernest Shepherd's share of Shepherd & Woodward in 1947 [when Mr Shepherd died]. Records for the business can be found up until 1975. However Shepherd & Woodward is still run by members of the Venables family.

Academic mortarboard made from a horizontal square board which is covered in felt and fixed upon a skull-cap which is also made from reinforced felt which is ridged. The skull-cap comes down to a point at the front and is trimmed with grosgrain ribbon. On top of the board there is a tassel in the centre which is held in place by a shank button, covered in black fabric.
