Biographical history

Tumi is the label of Tumi Holdings Inc., a luxury luggage company that was founded in New Jersey, United States by Charlie Clifford. Clifford gained an MBA in 1967 and then worked in the Peace Corps in Peru. After returning to the United States and working for a corporation for five years, in 1974 he invested in a friend’s business importing crafts from the Andes. The following year Tumi was founded with partner Seth McQuillan, specializing in leather travel bags. The company faced financial difficulties in the early 1980s and responded by targeting business travellers, producing their bags in black ballistic nylon to make them durable. In the 1990s Tumi expanded into Europe, including opening a concession in London’s Harrods department store. Tumi was bought out by Doughty Hanson & Co. in 2004 and then acquired by luggage company Samsonite International SA in 2012.

Scope and content

This outdoor jacket, in a burnt orange colour with contrasting grey functional details, features vertical welted pockets along the side seams at the waist. The front of the jacket has two extra-large, rectangular pockets that unzip on two sides. The right pocket includes various compartments, such as a mesh accessory pouch designed for storing travel documents. The left pocket has a metal barcode that can be scanned if the jacket is lost. A small accessory pocket is located on the left sleeve, mid-arm. For ventilation, there are two zips under each arm and a storm flap/rain guard across the back, which lifts to reveal grey mesh for airflow. The cuffs feature Velcro tabs for adjustable fit, and the waistband has adjustable drawcords for a customisable fit. The right chest includes a rubber grommet opening for headphones. Tumi branding is found on the zips, left chest, and the back of the collar.

      TRAVELERS JACKET
      Tumi
      2004
Following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack in New York, airport security was strengthened. In response to the release of the 9/11 Commission Report in 2004 and the terrorist attacks on two Russian airlines in the same year, new regulations were implemented in the United States, allowing Transportation Security Administration officers to conduct more frequent and thorough searches and full body pat-downs of passengers. In response, Tumi created this jacket to eliminate the need for carry-on luggage and permit passengers to pass through X-ray security without emptying their pockets. It has two exterior pockets with zips, compartments for passports and boarding passes, a key lanyard, pen holders, openings for headphone routing, mesh-lined pit zips and a mesh dump pocket. The jacket’s back is lined with padded mesh to support the additional weight carried.
