History
Tumi is the label of Tumi Holdings Inc., a luxury luggage company that was founded in New Jersey, United States by Charlie Clifford. Clifford gained an MBA in 1967 and then worked in the Peace Corps in Peru. After returning to the United States and working for a corporation for five years, in 1974 he invested in a friend’s business importing crafts from the Andes. The following year Tumi was founded with partner Seth McQuillan, specializing in leather travel bags. The company faced financial difficulties in the early 1980s and responded by targeting business travellers, producing their bags in black ballistic nylon to make them durable. In the 1990s Tumi expanded into Europe, including opening a concession in London’s Harrods department store. Tumi was bought out by Doughty Hanson & Co. in 2004 and then acquired by luggage company Samsonite International SA in 2012.
