Exparte Polytechnic Institution Case for the Opinion of Sir F Pollock in reference to the application for a Charter, whether, supposing the Charter be granted for puposes purely scientific it would be competent for the members of the Society by their Bye Laws to make a division of profit amongst themselves. Response of Fred Pollock, dated 7 July 1838, stating that if the powers granted by the Charter were limited to the mere promotion and encouragement of science and contained no clause authorising a division of profit... the members of the Institution could not with propriety and safety divide any profit among themselves.
