Scope and content
1. Photograph showing H. Illman of the Poly at the beginning of the Southern CC Championships which were held at South Darenth on 27th Feb 1937. H. Illman is running, second from the left. 2. Photograph of H. Illman approaching the finish line to win the Southern CC Championships on 27th Feb 1937. The writing to the side states 'it was at this meet that, owing to marked deterioration of the weather during the senior race, that race was declared void.' 3-7. The five small images show Arthur Furze competing in various events. Furze passed away in December 1982 and the images were donated by his sister, Miss Margaret Furze, 'in remembrance of her late brother.' Furze was a prominant athlete, who was Empire and AAA bronze medalist at 6 miles in 1934. 3. Photograph of Furze crossing the finish line to win a club race, possibly one of his four Club 4 miles championships. n. d. 4. Photograph of a packed stadium, taken from the interior of the stadium. The image is likely to have been taken during the Berlin Olympic Summer Games in 1936. No names or dates have been given. 5. Photograph of athletic event, taken at the White City stadium. The image was taken from the crowd of spectators and the athletes are too far to be identifiable. Judging by the context, however, it is possible that one of the athletes is Arthur Furze. No names or dates have been given. 6. Photograph of Arthur Furze in a newspaper. The writing below states 'A Furze. first in North of Thames run.' n. d. 7. Photograph of Arthur Furze and three, unidentified, smartly dressed gentlemen standing inside a stadium. Visible in the background are flags of various nations, indicating that this image is likely to have been taken during the Berlin Olympic summer games in 1936. n.d.
