'We have received the following letter from John Leng & Co. Ltd.:-
'We have an idea that we might in the near future be able to use again 'THE GIRL HE THOUGHT HE MARRIED' by H.J. ALLINGHAM. You may remember that we bought this from you in 1923 and in 1928 we acquired the sixpenny and under book rights. I shall be glad to know whether the story has appeared anywhere else than with ourselves, as this would naturally weigh with us in considering another use.'
The original title of this story was 'TRICKED INTO MARRIAGE'. It appeared serially in 'The Mascot' in 1924, and Leng's bought the Under-Sixpenny book rights in December 1927 for 'White heather Novels'. According to our records, therefore, the story has appeared only in the Leng publications, and, on hearing that it is agreeable to you, we will write Leng's to that effect.'

'I have yours of the 21st. The story you mention 'The Girl He Thought He Married' (Tricked into Marriage) is I think the one published as a 4d. book under the title 'His Dream Girl'. If so it has not been published elsewhere. Get as much as you can for it (one serial use); There is a run on me just now. My Indian summer I suppose!’

'Mr Harvey offers Fifty Guineas for the third serial use of 'KEPT FROM HER CHILD' - this is his limit.
The original title of 'KEPT FROM HER CHILD' was 'A MOTHER'S LOVE' and the story was written for and was published in 'The Mascot' in 1925. The 'Home Mirror' used the story under the title of 'EMPTY ARMS'.'

'Thank you for writing so promptly about Convict 98. I do not think your suggestion about someone else re-writing it would do because it is your writing that I want in the story.
If you could let me have the first instalment re-written, by August 15th, this would do. Would that be of any help to you?
I am so very anxious for you to do it yourself and there would not be so very much re-writing in it – not nearly so much as the one you are doing just now for FAMILY JOURNAL because there, you are reducing over seventy instalments to twenty-five, and there would be nothing like this in the Convict 98 one, which could run to the length at which it at present stands.
If you feel, however, you could not manage it, you will of course say so and, while I shall be exceedingly sorry, I shall understand.'

'In reply to your letter of Dec 18, Mr Allingham suggests that the terms for one serial use of 'THE GIRL HE THOUGHT HE MARRIED' be the same as for 'WRONGED' - viz. 12/6d per 1,000 words. The story has not appeared anywhere else than with yourselves.'

'Some little time ago we had correspondence with you as to one serial use of 'The Girl He Thought He Married' by Mr Allingham, and you quoted 12/6d per 1,000 words. We delayed doing anything in the matter until we got our programme adjusted. We have now found a place for the story and I am writing to say that we accept your offer.'
