‘Thanks for your p.c. of a day or two back - will send you something as soon as I can. At present I am full up with serial work but hope to get this off my hands in a few weeks time. By the way may I make a suggestion? Why doesn’t your firm pay more promptly? There are scores of men like myself knocking about Fleet Street - Here am I with quite a gift for popular fiction and yet I have to stick to journalism for my bread and butter simply because journalism means ready money – Although I only do fiction 2 days a week I have at the present moment over £50 worth of stuff out – all accepted but not published and therefore not paid for. One of your paper has had a story of mine 11 months, another has had one 5 months. Is it surprising that we are driven to the cheaper houses where you deliver your copy in the morning and call for the money in the afternoon?'
