      BUTTON BRACES JEANS
      Prada Linea Rossa
      2000–5
From 1890 to 1944, the waistband of Levi’s 501 jeans featured six metal buttons, four on the front and two on the back. The buttons were designed to fasten to braces which were worn to hold up men’s trousers before the widespread adoption of waist belts. From 1944 onwards they were removed from 501’s, along with the original cinch tab back, after the US War Production Board ordered the elimination of unnecessary clothing components to save wartime resources. Launched in 1997, Prada Linea Rossa (also known as Prada Sport) was renowned for its technical construction and modern approach to design. However, these jeans feature six metal suspender buttons, a nod to the earliest denim jeans and to the growing trend for vintage-inspired denim at the turn of the twenty-first century.
