Administrative history

J. Wippell & Co. Ltd was registered in 1902 but the company traces its beginnings to a 1789 building at 219 High Street, Exeter. Joseph Wippell established a grocery business in Exeter in 1802 and in 1834 his son, Joseph Wippell Junior, took over the established woollen drapers William Arden and its premises at 219 High Street. During the 1800s the company expanded into supplying the Church of England as church furnishers and clergy outfitters. Their first London shop was opened in 1897 and they opened premises in Manchester in 1918. From the 1950s they also began making university robes.

Scope and content

Anglican Bishops cassock made of purple wool. It fastens at the right shoulder, with a single button, with the front edge following the curve of the neck. The inside edge fastens to the inside shoulder in the same place. The centre front edge is shifted over to fall in-line with the shoulder point. The waist line has a belt which closes at the centre front with two self covered buttons. The side seam has a long gusset, with a pleat in the centre back. The side seams are sewn until the waist point, where they open out to form a pleat which gives more volume to the lower body. The cassock is finished with off white top stitching. The inside is half lined in an off-white cotton lining with purple top stitching. Garment construction quality is low, using mixtures of qualities and colours of threads.
