Administrative history
Remploy Limited was established by the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act, 1944 to provide employment for those injured during the war and for coal miners with health conditions. The organisation directly employed disabled people in a number of factories across the United Kingdom - the first opened in 1946 - at its height it ran 83 factories. From 2007 the government began a programme of factory closures.
After a 2012 review of employment of people with disabilities government subsidies were removed from Remploy factories leading to further closures and a restructure by the Department for Work and Pensions. The organisation was succeeded by the Disabled People's Employment Corporation (GB) Limited (DEPC). The DEPC sold its Employment Service business in April 2015 to US service provider Maximus (which retained the name Remploy) and was subsequently wound up.
