Scope and content
Two part article taken from the Clerks' Journal 1 Sep 1888 and 1 Oct 1888. The first part of the article discusses the author's memories of the Royal Polytechnic Institution before going on to discuss the programme of evening classes, the atmosphere at the Poly, the gymnasium and the swimming bath, and the sports clubs. The author gives a history of the institute, including member numbers, and mentions both Hogg's work and that of other members of staff. Includes detailed discussion of the Cricket, Lawn Tennis, Pedestrianism, Rowing, and Swimming clubs. The second part of the article discusses the South Kensington curriculum in more detail, lists some prizewinners, and gives the details of how to join and costs, as well as present numbers of men and women members, students and day puils. It further gives details of finances raised to fund the Polytechnic and quotes from MPs about it. The reverse of the Oct 1888 article also features 'Notes from Buenos Ayres' [Buenos Aires] and a brief discussion of curious companies in London including window cleaners.
