Scope and content
Photograph of Aigle Hotel, Grindelwald and the Wetterhorn. The photograph is captioned: 990. Grindelwald, Hotel Aigle et le Wetterhorn. On reverse is printed Schroeder & Cie., Zurich.
In the 19th century, Grindelwald evolved from being a mountain farming village into a tourist centre. In 1818, the first hotel, the 'Hotel de L'Aigle' (the Black Eagle) was built by Weibel Christian Bohren. The first illustration of this guest house originated in 1822. The Illustrated London News reported that the hotel was destroyed by fire in March 1897. The Sunstar-Adler-Hotel now stands in its place.
