      The Polytechnic Magazine in September 1913 reports on a boy scouts trip to Switzerland which was met by Frank Thicke, old Poly Boy and well-known Swiss climber. In November 1914, he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Special Service - 9th Division in Flanders as an Interpreter.
