Comb-bound document produced by the Cultural & Community Studies Unit, School of Communication to accompany a slide programme of paintings, maps & documents by 19th century painters, historians and athropologists illustrating European expansion in the America in the 16th & 17th centuries & the Westward movement in the 18th & 19th centuries. The programme includes paintings & illustrations of the American West & the American Indian by George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, George Caleb Bingham, Thomas Cole, & others, plus a commentary taken from contemporary accounts of life in the far west.
