For warding off evil. Zhong Kui is a mythical character, also known as the 'Ghost catcher.' He is known as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings. His image is often painted on household gates as a guardian spirit. In this image he is dressed in Daoist tobes and hats and tabs, surrounded by half-naked demons and ghosts. Zheng Chenggong (also known as Koxinga) was a Ming loyalist and the chief commander of Ming troops on the maritime front in the last years of the dynasty. He took over Formosa (Taiwan) in 1661-1662, which became his base for resisting the Manchu takeover of China. He's pictured here dressed in pink flowing robes. In the background are pennants, ship masts and a river. First of pair.

Yue Fei (1103-1142) was a military general during the Southern Song dynasty. He is best known for leading the defense of Southern Song against the Jurchen-ruled Jin Dynasty in northern China. Since his death he's been seen as a patriot and national hero, and a symbol of loyalty. Here he is pictured in green robes, with a helmet and sword, in front of pennants and a military encampment in the mountains. Second of pair.
