Headed notepaper: The Penny Magazine, La Belle Sauvage, Ludgate Hill, EC, London. Signed.
'I am using your story 'The Black Knight'. It is not the best story you have done of this length but it is not by any means a bad one. I am getting together the stories of my Christmas Number. Could you let me have a story between now and a months time of 4,000 words for this number, with plenty of movement in it, and scope for a couple of good illustrations? You might let me have a line if you can undertake this so that I can make my arrangements accordingly.'

Part of Herbert Allingham
Headed notepaper: The Tribune, 23-29 Bouverie Street, Fleet Street, London EC. Signed by the Literary Editor.
'Many thanks for your note. I shall have pleasure in using Mrs. Allingham's takes entitled 'The Wild Convolvulous', and 'The Prince's Wish' at half a guinea each. I am returning the story about Santa Claus because it is a little too early in the season to begin talking of Christmas trees. But is is a pleasant story, and I should be glad to use it but for this objection. Perhaps Mrs Allingham will submit some other stories at her convenience. I shall always be glad to consider them.'

'Have you a story by you which you could let me have in place of this one as I am afraid I must confess to being disappointed with it. It is by no means as good as the Black Knight. If you have another which you could let me have in place of it I should be very glad.'

'Thanks for sending another yarn. Will write you concerning it in a few days. I think you have got hold of some rumours. At all events I am probably bringing out a new monthly magazine for the firm in the spring and am at present buying stuff. However if yoy ave a good story of 3000-35000 words please send it along. I might be able to use it for the first number, but I make no secret of the fact that it will have to be a grand yarn. I close for press in a fortnight.’
