Li Huiquan / 李汇泉
Marshal He Long (1896-1969) led guerilla forces in northwest China during both the War of Resistence against Japan and the Civil War. He was named one of 10 Marshals of China in 1969, but fell out with Mao over the purge of Peng Dehuai. He Long was purged in 1966, one of the first PLA leaders to go, and died in jail in 1969.

Marshal Xu Xiangqian (1901-1990) was an important military leader during the Sino-Japanese and Civil Wars, known for defeating numerically and technically superiod forces. He held a series of roles under the PRC, and was one of the military supporters for Hua Guofeng's overthrow of the Gang of Four. He was one of the 10 Marshals of China.

Liu Yunsheng / 刘云生
Marshal Luo Ronghuan (1902-1963) served as the political commissar of Lin Biao in Manchuria during the Chinese Civil War. In 1949, he became the Chief of Staff for the People's Liberation Army. He was one of China's 10 Marshals.

Ceng Tingzhong / 曾廷仲
Marshal Liu Bocheng (1892-1986) was one of the army's top strategists and theoriticians. While he stood next to Mao on the Tiananmen rostrum when Mao proclaimed the new republic, Liu never truly gained Mao's trust, and he career suffered as a result. He largely withdrew from politics after 1959, citing reasons of ill-health. He is one of the 10 Marshals of China.

Xiao Ke / 晓柯
Marshal Zhu De (1886-1976) was one of the pioneers of the Communist Party and is considered the founder of the People's Liberation Army. During the Sino-Japanese War and the Civil War, Zhu was the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, and he was later named one of the 10 Marshals of China.

Fan Huaizhang / 樊怀章
Marshal Ye Jianying (1897-1986) played a role in Mao's ascent to Communist Party power during the Long March, after he sided with Mao instead of Zhang Guotao. He was one of the 10 Marshals of China, but lost his political power in the 1950s after he was perceived to be soft on class struggle. He became Defense Minister in 1975 and was crucial in the overthrow of the Gang of Four and the installation of Hua Guofeng.

Xue Wenbing / 雪文兵
Chen Yi (1901-1972), one of the 10 Marshals of China, was Major of Shanghai in the 1950s before becoming Foreign Minister in 1958. While he was heavily criticised during the Cultural Revolution, he was never formally dismissed from his position. Mao attended his 1972 funeral, which was the Chairman's last public appearance.

Xiao Ke / 晓柯
Marshall Peng Dehuai (1989-1974) was the Minister of Defense until he was purged in 1959 after coming into conflict with Mao at the Lushan Conference. He was a major target during the Cultural Revolution and died in prison. He was post-humously rehabilitated by Deng Xiaoping.
