Zhang Side was born a poor peasant. He joined the Red Army in 1933, and undertook the Long March, reaching Yan'an. In Yan'an he worked in Communications, as well as leading a team that made charcoal in the forests. In 1944 he died when a kiln collapsed on him, and was memorialized in Mao Zedong's speech 'Serve the People', which was one of the constantly read articles during the Cultural Revolution.
