Scope and content

Picture of San Mao and Alexa tying each other's red scarves. San Mao is a comic originally created by Zhang Leping in 1930s Shanghai. San Mao literally means 'three hairs', and he is always depicted with three hairs. This lack of hair originally symbolised malnutrition, and San Mao's life of poverty was shown against a backdrop of colonialisation and war. In the Mao years, San Mao's fortunes improved, and here he is depicted with a Russian friend.
