Soldiers making reed baskets. Nanniwan was an area where the Communists began working towards agricultural self-sufficiency, experimenting with small scale agricultural development as well as poppy development during the Anti-Japanese war. Part of the Eighth Route Army was sent there in 1943 to assist with production. It was featured in a revolutionary song in 1943.
