The first mention of the Men’s Basketball Society was through a notice in the McGarel in October 1974, which gave details of the society’s training on Wednesday’s 3-5pm at the Main Gym in Regent Street campus. The society participated in regular league matches, and were winners of their division in the academic year of 1973/74. In 1975, students had training on Wednesdays at 4pm-5pm at the Regent Street Gym. On Thursdays they trained at 7pm-9pm at Swiss Cottage.

In 1980, the first team in the society played in the Premier Division of the London League, whilst the second team played in the First Division of the Metropolitan London League. In October of that year, the team was entered into the B.P.S.A K.O. Cup. In March 1981, the second team played in the finals of the B.P.S.A cup losing against Ulster.

Creations Fischer

Creations Fischer was a tailoring company and manufacturer primarily of menswear. It was started in Paris by Georges Fischer (1924-2021), a Jewish Hungarian tailor who had served his tailoring apprenticeship in Budapest as a teenager. After the Second World War he went to France as a refugee and worked for raincoat company Jupiter.

Creations Fischer had its main office and factory in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, at the foot of Montmartre, and a tailoring factory 300km outside of Paris in Buzançais. They sold direct to stores in the French capital, one of their first clients was the high-end Parisian menswear store Arnys. Dior approached Georges Fischer when they wanted to set up a menswear line in the late 1960s and he designed and manufactured Christian Dior Monsieur. He then also created menswear and tailoring for other companies including Givenchy, Charvet, and Hermès.

The company was established in 1892 by David Lewis Isaacs and was located at 124 Great Portland Street, London. Trading under the name ‘D Lewis,’ the company was initially a traditional gentlemen’s outfitters. In the early 1900's, Great Portland Street became known as 'Motor Row' due to the number of motor showrooms located on the street. D. Lewis Ltd therefore started specialising in coats, gloves, goggles and headgear for drivers. In the 1960s, the name was changed to Lewis Leathers. The Issacs family ran the business until 1980. The Great Portland Street Store closed in 1993 and for a spell the company was mail order only. The t-shirts were manufactured in the Far East and printed in Manchester.
