The first of a series of 4 volumes offering insight into the Antiquities of Athens. It offers an Introduction, then descriptive and critical texts, accompanied by numerous original Etchings of scaled elevations, sections, plans and other illustrations. Subjects included: General View of Athens; Doric Portico at Athens; Ionic Temple at Ilyssus; Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes or Tower of the Winds; Choragic Monument of Lysicrates or Lantern of Demosthenes; Stoa, or Portico, commonly taken for the remains of the Temple of Olympian Jupiter.
