PLACE/NON-PLACE JEANS
Hussein Chalayan
Autumn Winter 2003
Hussein Chalayan’s Autumn Winter 2003–4 collection was inspired by the work of French anthropologist Marc Augé. Labels sewn inside pieces in the collection included the handwritten name of the maker of the garment and the date it was manufactured – these jeans were made in June 2003 – they also instructed purchasers to meet at London’s Heathrow Airport, Terminal 3 on 4 May 2004. On the day, two members of Chalayan’s team waited in the Terminal 3 arrivals lobby. Only a single individual appeared wearing one of the garments. The collection designs were pared down and minimal with archetypal garments such as these black denim jeans, a denim trucker jacket and V-neck wool jumper, but also incorporating pockets useful for travel.
