The fashion industry's globalisation has resulted in a complicated relationship between where brands are based and where their products are produced. Founded in Spain in 1917 by the designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, the house moved to Paris in 1937. This mask, however, was made for Balenciaga in Slovenia by Wolford, an Austrian hosiery maker.

Manufactured by Wolford in Slovenia, the packaging for the Balenciaga care mask states that it is not a medical device. It also informs the consumer that before packaging the mask has been treated with UV light to kill bacteria, viruses and germs.
