The initials of the three founders Bradley, Voorhees & Day form the name of the firm. The company was established in New York in 1876. The B.V.D. trademark was acquired by The Union Underwear Company (owners of Fruit of the Loom) in 1976.

White lightweight woven cotton 'athletic union suit' underwear. It is a one-piece garment, sleeveless with a V-neck and scoop back, opens down the centre front and fastens with five white buttons. There is a flap opening at the back which fastens with one white button. Inserted at the back waist is cream cotton knitted jersey rib with two wide belt loops, the straps of the vest part are made of white cotton knitted jersey ribbing. Between the top and second button has been printed with 'PAT' and numbers (indecipherable). Makers label in the back of the neck.

This style of underwear became known as athletic union suits because they were a combination of an athlete's shorts and vest. American manufacturer B.V.D. introduced the sleeveless style of suit in 1914 made of woven rather than knitted fabrics. They became popular in Europe and the United Kingdom by the 1920s.
