Note
Tart cards were originally used by prostitutes in Soho, London to advertise their services.
In 1984, when the Post Office Act of 1953 was repealed (which had made it illegal to advertise in telephone boxes in the UK), sex workers began paying ‘carders’ to place cards inside telephone boxes to advertise their services. The practice died out in 2001 when the UK made the act of posting tart cards inside telephone boxes punishable by either six months in prison or a £5000 fine.
