Administrative history
In 1852 James Gieve joined a Portsmouth tailoring firm owned by John Gault and together they established Galt & Gieve. It was renamed Gieve & Co. in 1887 and, after expanding to London in the early 1900s, the company became Gieves Ltd. From its beginnings Gieves was renowned for its associations with the Royal Navy, tailoring officers uniforms and gaining a number of Royal appointments and warrants. They merged with Hawkes & Co in 1974, continuing to trade as Gieves & Hawkes.

Scope and content
Dark navy blue short jacket with peaked lapels, gold buttons and gold braid stripes around cuffs. The jacket has six button holes down each lapel and the front of the jacket. It has six gold coloured metal shank buttons embossed with the Royal Navy emblem of a fouled anchor under the St Edwards crown worn by Elizabeth II. There are also two separate buttons linked with a metal clip to secure the jacket. The buttons are back stamped with 'GIEVES'. On each lower sleeve are three bands of goldwork braid, the third band also has a loop - these are for the officer rank of Commander. The jacket is lined in black rayon (or silk?) sateen and has lines of quilting running vertically from the hem to the armhole on the back panels. The sleeves are lined in white twilled rayon (or silk?). There is a tailors label inside the right lower inside pocket.
