      NWU TYPE 1 TROUSERS
      Bethel Industries Inc.
      2010
The US Navy introduced the Naval Working Uniform (NWU) Type 1 uniform in 2008, and it featured a digital camouflage pattern derived from the MARPAT camouflage introduced in 2002. The camouflage features a miniature version of the Navy flag’s inner emblem and ‘USN’ underneath. The symbol consists of an anchor, a square-rigged ship with three masts, and an eagle. The uniform was divisive, with sailors referring to it as ‘Aquaflage’ because the blue camouflage appeared to be only useful if the wearer fell overboard. In 2012 it was reported that the uniforms were highly flammable and in 2016 it was announced that the NWU Type 1 was to be eliminated in favour of the Type III at a net cost of around US$180 million.
