Established in 2002, it meets once per term and reports to the Academic Council on academic and strategic issues and the Vice-Chancellor's Executive Group on financial and operational issues.

Terms of Reference: responsible through the University's management structure for the development and implementation of University's policy and strategy on research and the uni-level direction of research activity; to foster internally and to represent externally a vibrant university research centre; to facilitate the assessment of the University's research through periodic external assessment exercises and bids for project funding; to evaluate and make recommendations on the effectiveness of current arrangements to support the exploitation plans for the University's research strategy and to monitor and evaluate the University's research performance against the plans and targets; to develop and keep under review mechanisms for collaborating with Campuses, Schools and Departments in its decision making processes; to consider for approval the research strategies of and targets of Research Centres and Schools, following their approval at campus level; to make recommendations to VCEG on the distribution of funds to develop research; to review periodically the University's Research Policy, Strategy and Operational Framework; to maintain an overview of and make recommendations on staff development activities relating to research.

Members: Ex-officio - the University's Director of Research and Consultancy, Research Centre Directors. Nominated - 1 representative from each school (normally the head). Co-opted - as approved by the Academic Council. Members to serve a maximum of 3 years.
