Blunden, Margaret, Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Professor Margaret Blunden was Former Provost of Regent Campus and emeritus Professor

She read History at Exeter University, followed by a Certificate in Education (with distinction) at Cambridge. She studied for an MA in History at Exeter, and then gained a DPhil at Oxford on Anglican Clergy and the Politics of Southern Africa, 1879-1910.

Her early career was in school teaching, followed by part-time lecturing at the Polytechnic of North London, then in further education at the Open University.

In 1987 she was appointed to PCL as the Head of School of Social and Policy Studies.

In 1992 she became Dean of the Faculty of Business & Management and Social Studies.

In 1997 she was appointed Provost of the Regent Campus

From 2001 she was also Deputy Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for external affairs.

She played a leading role in the establishment of a joint UW and University of Belgrade International Summer School held in Montenegro in 1998, seeing it an opportunity to build bridges across the deep political divides in the region by bringing academics together.

In 2002 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University in recognition of the support she gave to its academics during oppression from the Milosevic regime.

Other roles and responsibilities included: member of the Executive Committee of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and Trustee of the Institute; Acting Director of the Policy Studies Institute in 1997; Director of University of Westminster International 1996-2004; Trustee of Marylebone Health Centre Trust from 2002; Chair of Westminster Business Consultants 1995-2004.

She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters UW on 15 November 2004.
