History
The 19th Annual Meeting of the Polytechnic Friendly Society took place on 3 March 1898, so we can presume the Society started in 1878 or 1879. Originally founded at the Hanover Sick Fund by Robert Mitchell, the two names seems to have been used interchangeably throughout the 1880s and 1890s. The Society reported regularly on its finances in the Polytechnic Magazine, and advertised up until 1956.
