'Home Companion. Family Journal: Your suggestion for the development of my new story took my breath away when I read it first of all! Then I realised the wonder of it and think it is really splendid; it will make a great story. The only thing I would ask you not to do is elaborate John Brand’s weakness (women). I think it would be quite enough if his affair with Julia was his only one, and if it was Julia, herself, who brought it on. However, this is not a big point and in your own inimitable way you will gloss nicely over anything of this sort.
As desired I am returning your letter and shall look forward so very much to seeing number 3.'

Manuscript annotation: 'Instalment 2 is excellent.'

''The jealousy of John Deane' ('The Green-Eyed') was written for 'Woman's Weekly' in 1917 and susequently - in August 1918 - Mr Harvey bought the second serial rights. It is a short serial of 50,000 words.
We are looking over your old stories, and if we come across anything likely to suit Mrs Cooper we will send it along.'

'I am writing again to remind you about my FAMILY JOURNAL boom story which I 'spoke' for and want about the middle of September. I got your letter in which you seemed a bit uncertain whether you could do it or not. I shall be terribly disappointed, however, if you don’t, so do try and fit me in, will you please?
Meantime, have you any story that you think would be suitable for HOME COMPANION? If so, would you send it on to me to look at.'

‘I hope your engagements have eased off sufficiently by now to enable you to fit in a story for me. Could you let me have your ideas for a first instalment of a convict story with the convict’s wife or sweetheart fighting tooth and nail for him? I'll be glad to hear if you can manage to do this for me.'

'You will remember I wrote you two or three weeks ago and asked if you had any good stories that you could send me. You were going to ask your secertary to look them up. As I have not had anything so far, I though I'd remind you. As one has to book you a long time in advance! will it be possible for you to follow the present serial in F. J. with another one? I DO HOPE SO!’
