Hua Tuo (c. 140–208) was an ancient Chinese physician who lived in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. The historical texts "Records of the Three Kingdoms" and "Book of the Later Han" record Hua as the first person in China to use anaesthesia during surgery. Zhang Heng (AD 78-139) was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, cartographer and statesman. Among his accomplishments were the invention of the first seismometer, which could detect earthquakes up to 500km away. He also invented the world's first water-powered armillary sphere to assist astronomical observation, and improved upon Chinese calculations for pi.
