British Army Underwear

Cream wool knit underwear with cream calico cotton yoke. The underwear fastens centre front with three cream plastic buttons and has two attached cotton straps on each side of the waist for adjustment. They are fitted and come down to mid thigh with a deep rib knit band around the hem and a gusset at the crotch. There are scratch marks on the buttons and some stains. They are stamped in black ink on the left back waist: WOMBWELL & Co. LTD / 39" / 1941

Rayon blend white jersey vest. It has been constructed as a tubular knit on a rotary frame so there are no side seams. The arm holes have been cut to sit very narrowly on the chest and the neck and armholes have been finished with a thick coverstitch with a much lighter rolled hem finishing on the hem. Paper shop price label attached.

Short sleeved cream wool knitted pullover top worn as an undergarment. It has a crew neck and front packet with three buttonholes (only the middle button remains intact). It is constructed with flat fell seams and has no shoulder seams . The sleeve seams form a diamond shaped underarm gusset. It has a curved hem, longer at the back and gussets at the side seams.

Cream cotton knitted cotton jersey full length underwear (bottom half of the body). They have a button fly which fastens with three white plastic buttons (visible) above an opening. The waist is lined in white woven cotton and has lengths of white cotton tape sewn around the outside. They have a diamond shaped insert at the crotch and wide rib knit bands around the ankles. Unworn new old stock. Label in the centre back inside waist with the Utility CC41 mark. St Margaret

Variegated cream wool knitted jersey underwear short sleeve top in the style of a T-shirt. It has a high round neck and wide knitted ribbing bands around the bottom of the sleeves and the hem. Wool yarn is cream with areas of pale grey creating a fine uneven variegated stripe effect in the knit. The top is constructed with butted flat seams in cream thread. Cream cotton 'string' vest underwear. Made of a tube of knitted netting with small diamond shaped holes and lots of stretch - no side seams. The scoop neckline, deep armholes and bottom edge are bound with white cotton ribbing which also create narrow straps over the shoulders. 1970s blue Bukta logo on the label in the back of the neck.

Blue and white striped pyjama jacket (part of a pair of pyjamas). It is made of Luvisca, a fabric made of cotton and rayon yarns. The vertical stripes are a mix of broad pale blue, narrower stripes of mid and dark blue all edged with narrow white stripes. The jacket has a turn down collar and fastens centre front with three opaque white plastic buttons. It has a small opaque white plastic button at the collar which fastens with a loop (possibly added later). On the left chest is a patch pocket with a pointed welt with the stripes horizontal. Label in the form of a hanging loop in the back of the neck in red lettering on white with an emblem of a red button in a black circle with 'TESTED QUALITY' around the outside. Size 40. Luvisca
