He was an architectural historian and a member of the School of Architecture Advisory Committee in at least 1932. In October 1945 he chaired a lecture in the Polytechnic Library.
A Sir Banister Fletcher Prize was established when he bequeathed a legacy of £1500 to the Polytechnic. This money was transferred in 1954 but the first reference to the award of the prize is in March 1958 when the Magazine reports that an Ian Bampton was awarded the £50 prize, enabling him to study the history of the architecture in the Leeward Islands, Antigua for 3 years.
