The first proposal to establish the committee was in 1993 and again in 1999. The committee was not established until 2000 an it held its first meeeting in October 2000. The committee reports to the Academic Council once a year.

Terms of Reference: consider general ethical issues relating to all teaching and research of the University which involves investigations on human participants; to devise, develop and review the University's Code of Practice for investigations on human participants; consider the ethical implications of individual proposals for investigations on human participants and either approve or not approve or require modifications to such proposals; to refer individual proposals to external ethics approval as necessary.

Members: members are appointed for 4 years. The Chair is not an employee of the University and is appointed by the Academic Council. 2 members nominated by each campus from all categories of staff, 2 members of central administrative staff nominated by the Director of Resources and Operations, 1 postgraduate research student nominated by the Student Union, 1 representative of the Health and Safety Committee, co-opted members - a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 co-opted by the existing membership including at least 1 member who shall be in membership of British Psychological Society and be in professional practice. Secretary to be the Academic Registrar or nominated.
