Zhang Heng (AD 78-139) was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, cartographer and statesman. Among his accomplishments were the invention of the first seismometer, which could detect earthquakes up to 500km away. He also invented the world's first water-powered armillary sphere to assist astronomical observation, and improved upon Chinese calculations for pi.
