Black wool double breasted frock coat with black silk grosgrain lapels and silk woven thread wrapped shank buttons. The black coat cloth is woollen tweed with a rough hairy surface. The silk grosgrain extends over the lapels to the underside, lining the front panels. The rest of the lining to the torso and tails is a lighter weight black silk. It features close parallel lines of quilting under the arms creating a free form spiral effect. There is one pocket in the left chest lining which closes with a silk woven thread shank button and a loop. There are vertical slit pockets in each coat tail. Each cuff has two small silk woven thread wrapped shank buttons with false button holes and there are two larger buttons at the centre back waist seam. The cuff buttons have text stamped into the metal backs. All of the buttons have damage to the edges where the silk threads have worn through, there is some seam stitching coming undone in the silk lining and the centre back of the lining may have been repaired with a vertical line of stitching.
