        History

The Centre for Sustainable Development (CfSD) was established within the School of the Built Environment (SABE) at the University of Westminster in 1998, in recognition of that a growing number of research activities were convening under a common theme of sustainable development.

CfSD provided a forum for collaborative research initiatives and supported joint working between researchers and academics from diverse research disciplines within the School. CfSD also hosted an University-wide interdisciplinary research network for staff members who are actively involved in research in various aspects of sustainable development.

An explicit aim of CfSD was to promote collaborative research and joint working between researchers and academics in research interests as seemingly diverse as transport, governance and democracy, environmental protection, public health, energy and resource use, urban planning and design, rural affairs, social justice, housing, property development and architecture, but with a common theme - sustainable development.

The CfSD network organised regular internal research seminars and meetings. In this way, CfSD raised the profile of sustainable development as a discipline within the University and with its outside contacts, whilst also providing a platform from which to bid for research, consultancy and training contracts pertaining to the cross-cutting agenda which describes 'sustainable development'.

The Centre for Sustainable Development specialised in the relationship between sustainable development and social exclusion, between poverty and the environment in the UK.
