Head of the firm of George Carter & Sons (gentlemen's outfitters) which was founded by his father, and which had 20-30 branches in London and Surrey. He was a liveryman and a Freeman of the City of London and a member of the Needlemakers Company. In 1874 he became a Gunner in the 3rd Middx. Royal Garrison Artillery Corp, and later joined the North London Rifle Club.
