Kauf was founded in 1904 by Willhelmine Kauf-Frey specialising in making and laundering men's shirts. It was registered as Otto Kauf AG in 1955 and based in Ebnat-Kapell, St Gall, Switzerland. In 2000 they changed their name to Kauf AG. They have been making Libero shirts since the design was patented in 1972.

Trevira was introduced in 1956 as the brand name for polyester products made by Hoechst AG. The company and brand have had multiple owners since 1998.

Scope and content

Black jersey knit long sleeved shirt made of Trevira polyester. It has a wide turn down collar with stiffening inside and fastens centre front with eight buttons on a dress front button stand. It has a small patch pocket on the left chest and has stiffened cuffs which fasten with two buttons. All of the buttons are black plastic.

The sleeves and shoulder yoke of the shirt have been cut in one section (the design, named 'Libero', was by Peter Kauf and was patented by Otto Kauf AG in 1972). It has a curved centre back section to the design and no side seams.

The design aimed to improve the cut of fitted shirts by making the shoulder piece as one with the sleeves, avoiding seams under the arms and to make production more efficient.
