Admiral was trademarked in 1914 by Cook & Hurst Ltd, who had begun manufacturing hosiery in Leicester in 1908. The trademark was registered in 1922 and the logo was based on the rank stripes of an admiral in the Royal Navy. Admiral produced rugby shirts for the Royal Navy from the First World War until the 1970s. The label became closely associated with Leeds United Football club after first sponsoring them in 1973. The company went bankrupt in 1982 and the name has been owned and licenced by a number of different companies since then. They have supplied sports kits for clubs and national teams in the United Kingdom and internationally.
