The National Fire Service was created in Great Britain in 1941 during the Second World War. It existed until 1948, when it was again split by the Fire Services Act 1947, with fire services reverting to local authority control.

Black horsehide peacoat worn as part of a Second World War fireman's uniform. It has a high double breasted lapel which fastens to the neckline for protection and has reinforced shoulders and back yoke. It has six silver buttons embossed with 'NFS' on the front which are back stamped with 'Firmin London'. There are two button on the cuff strap which are decorative only. The right side attaches to an adjustable strap on the inside of the jacket with a popper fastening. The jacket is fully lined. There are no labels.
